This is a great "conversation" quilt. Pull out all your favorite seasonal fabrics and conversation prints to make this applique quilt fun. Fuse the pieces in place and machine applique around them to make it fast.

There are 80 or 100 different fabric prints in Marti's quilt! Individual blocks have pieces cut from 10 to 25 fabrics. Marti used a variety of black and white prints for backgrounds, and dressed her characters in 4 to 6 different prints for sleeves and dresses, etc.

Marti livened up the quilt with hearts, clovers, fall leaves, vegetables, Americana and Christmas prints. March winds are flying a kite cut from an Elinor Peace Bailey fabric. April showers are repesented by a background of umbrellas and there's an Easter bunny peeking out from behind Sue's dress. Keep scrolling down and have fun  fabric shopping with Sunbonnet Sue and Overall Bill!

Make individual patterns for each applique piece from the patterns provided. Add seam allowances for hand applique, however, DO NOT ADD SEAM ALLOWANCES for fused applique (see below for abbreviated instructions for Fused Applique method).

Make the blocks. Construct the quilt interior in 4 rows of 3 blocks as shown above. Add border 1, sides first, then top and bottom. Sew a corner square to the ends of the top and bottom strips of border 2. Add border 2, sides first, then top and bottom. Sandwich the quilt with batting and backing, quilt and bind.

FUSIBLE APPLIQUE

  1. Cut out all the pieces for each block.
  2. Fuse paper backed webbing to the wrong side of all shapes.
  3. Arrange them to your liking on the block background. Remove the papers and fuse in place. Marti machine blanket stitched around the sleeves, dresses and some of the hats before fusing in place.
  4. Machine applique all pieces using an invisible stitch.

Dandelion Greens

A dozen Dandelion Greens blocks are shown with sashings below. Instructions to make the block with Set E are on this page.

The 12" block shown in the quilt design below is a variation of "Dandelion" in Volume 3, which is made with Set E. The finished length of one leg of the corner triangle in a 12" 8-pointed star is 3 7/16" — the same length as a finished 8-pointed star made with Set N. That means a diagonal half of the small star is the same size as the corner triangle in the large star — a Perfect Patchwork marriage!
